Hola from the Desert,
Alan and I have been toiling away in Doha for 2 ½ years now
(with 1 year in Kuwait as well), and we’ve decided we really like the
advantages of being international teachers.
We have had the good fortune of landing at a wonderful school, and we’ve
reinforced our belief that being happy at work makes life a lot easier. We also
have enjoyed the perks of being able to travel quite a bit the last couple of
years. This spring we will head to Bangkok to present at a regional conference,
head to New Delhi for 5 days for a badminton tournament, and then Alan goes off
to Jordan for a math conference. Soon,
Alan and I will have to decide when and where we may want to move for our next
jobs. Decisions, decisions – probably somewhere in South East Asia, or Brazil,
or … At this point, salaries still make
a difference to us and there are only so many schools at a level similar to
American School of Doha.
Luckily, we will be heading back to the Bay
Area/Sacramento/Port Townsend for the summer for a bit of relaxation and catch
up with family and friends. Neill is living in Sacramento, so we’ll probably
being using it as home base for July. DeYette will be returning to Santa
Barbara/Napa/Port Townsend as well. Thanks to Qatari tradition she continues to
live with us (single daughters should live with their fathers) in Doha while
working for North Western University, Qatar. She enjoys her job and puts up
with us.
So in general, things are moving merrily along. You may have
rain storms; we have sand storms. You have freezing weather in winter; we have
80 degree weather. You have 90 degree summers; we have 120 degrees. We choose
to find the best of it, or at least the humor in it. Of course, some days are
better than others, but that’s true any where.
